For familiesDuncannon Beach on the Hook Peninsula has a lifeguard on duty throughout the holidays making it a suitable beach for the bucket and sand brigade! Its sheltered location from heavy waves makes it a safe swimming beach for kids. Curracloe Beach is another option for safe swimming conditions and a regular holder of the Blue Flag beach status. Curracloe Beach’s beauty was also been featured in the Oscar-nominated movie ‘Brooklyn’.

For long walks – You can’t go past Courtown for its long stretch of sandy beach, ideal for walking barefoot with ice cream, or deep in your own thoughts. Alternatively, Morriscastle beach bears the distinction of being Europe’s longest continuous stretch of beach, extending for over 15kms from Curracloe to Cahore Point. You’ll find a coastal trek that connects Baginbun to Carnivan beach, which makes for a great hike.

For sunbathing – Most of Wexford’s beaches have soft, golden sand and because there’s such a wide choice, within a short drive, they don’t tend to find themselves overcrowded. You can’t go past Curracloe Beach, a 13km oasis of golden sand that’s nicely sheltered from the wind or Morriscastle Beach which is sheltered by sand dunes. Duncannon Beach also has a designated ‘mile’ of golden sand for sunbathing. Take your pick!

For activity – Rosslare Strand is a hub of activity for the sporting enthusiast, where you can enjoy kayaking, sailing, or windsurfing amongst other water sports. Ballinesker Beach, where ‘Saving Private Ryan’ was filmed, is suited to bird-watching and collecting sea-shells, whilst Carnivan Beach is enclosed either side by cliffs, making it an ideal spot for bodyboarding and other water pursuits.

For fishing – Kilmore Quay is steeped in maritime history and is a hub of activity for fishing. Look out for playful seals in the harbour! Alternatively, the lesser known Dollar Bay and Booley Bay on Hook Peninsula are great fishing options as large quantities of flatfish, dog fish and bass group here.

For surfing – The Surf Shack, a shack on Curracloe Beach, is the gateway to Wexford’s surfing scene and offers lessons and rental of boards and suits. Alternatively, the onshore breezes make Ballyhealy Beach is a good spot to catch a break too.
