Eoin Colfer play in the National Opera House this summer

Holy Mary by Eoin Colfer presented by Breda Cashe

July 20-22, 2023

First Communion season may be coming to a close around County Wexford, but not in the National Opera House, as Breda Cashe productions brings Eoin Colfer’s hilarious and touching comedy Holy Mary to the Jerome Hynes Theatre July 20-22 for three nights only.

Holy Mary is crafted from Colfer’s experience as a primary school teacher in Wexford the 1980s. The characters are recognisably real and achingly funny.

It’s 1985 and Mary and Majella are getting ready for the social occasion of the year—their First Holy Communion. Sworn enemies since baby infants, things have gone from bad to worse since Mary’s daddy moved in with Majella’s mammy. Can they find common ground or will they make a holy show in front of the whole congregation? A hilariously heart-warming story of confusion, Communion and confessional boxes for the whole family.

Described as ‘Touching, and Hilarious, Hilarious, Hilarious’ by The Arts Review, Holy Mary is directed by Aoife Spillane Hinks. The talented and versatile cast of two (Jacinta Sheerin and Mary Murray) nimbly transform into a multitude of characters, including two mothers, a benevolent priest, a patient teacher, a misguided father and two cheeky, but lovable nine-year-olds.

Tickets for this not to be missed production are €25/€20 + Facility Fee and can be purchased online at www.nationaloperahouse.ie or by ringing the National Opera House box-office on 053 912 2144.  Box Office phone lines are open from 9:30 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday.
