An Emigrant’s Tale Tour
How many people of Irish descent live across the globe? Too many to count, and on St Patrick’s Day, it seems everyone has a little Irish in them! Many people return to Ireland to trace their roots, to visit the homestead their ancestors left behind and to reconnect with the land.
On a day out with me, you will learn what life was life for the average person around the time your ancestors left. A customized tour that focuses on a specific time period, and visits a number of sites dotted across the south-east.
A customized tour can cover one or blend together a few of the following periods
An Gorta Mor – The Irish Potato Famine
1847 is one of the darkest periods in Ireland history. It saw many millions forced to flee the land to escape starvation. Together we can see artefacts saved from the time, climb aboard a replica of the transportation ships that sailed to the US and Canada and explore a preserved farmstead dating from that time. A fascinating tour that will give you a new perspective that no documentary or book can ever do.
The 1798 Rebellion
Inspired by events that were happening in the US and France at that time. Ireland too rose up. Wexford in particular. For ten hot and sticky days in August Wexford saw some terrible fighting. Centered around a tiny village called Boolavogue. Together we can visit the perfectly preserved home of one of the rebel leaders, visit the battle sites and find out what happened to the surviving rebels when the fighting was finished.
Once the civil war was over, work began to rebuild the Nation. Work that continues today. An island this small was always going to find it difficult to support its children and many were forced to travel to the UK and US for work, never to return. Together we can visit villages unchanged since that era, visit a replica of a 1950s grocery shop, and explore a museum dedicated to the home, reproducing the kitchen, the heart of the home, through the decades.
