Melanie and her Bossa Nua Trio return to the Wexford Arts Centre to present a delicious array of the songs of “the sound that seduced the world”, celebrating the innovative composers-musicians such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, Luis Bonfa, Sergio Mendes, whose well known classics include La Garota d’Ipanema, Wave, Desafinado, Mas que Nada among others. Melanie is joined by Venezuelan pianist Leopoldo Osio, guitarist Michael Behan and bassist Dave Mooney. A night not to be missed! – Their last show sold out, so advance booking is recommended!
Melanie O’Reilly, Dublin-born, Wexford-based is an internationally known jazz singer who has toured extensively throughout Ireland, France, Europe, Scotland, UK, as well as the United States, including the New York Lincoln Center, Edinburgh International Festival, Cork Jazz Festival, the NCH Dublin, the World Music Festival “d’Ici et D’Ailleurs” in France and represented Ireland in the Schoenberg Hall Los Angeles at the European Union Jazz Festival while performing Bossa and Latin jazz during her years in California with pianist-arranger Frank Martin at Berkeley Jazz Festival . She was awarded Jazz Artist in Residence Jazz Appreciation Series at Wexford Arts Centre 2021/22 and hosts her own radio show Jazz on the Bay on KCSM.org. She was also awarded Artist -in-Residence at La Mue Residency Normandy in 2019, she represented Wexford and Ireland at the European Heritage Weekend in France, and was one of Wexford’s representatives for Culture Night 2022. She is part-time vocal faculty at Co Wexford School of Music & Waltons School of Music Dublin.
Leopoldo Osio is a Venezuelan-Irish based jazz pianist who started playing piano at a very early age, inspired by Venezuelan Traditional Music as well as jazz and George Shearing which led him to study at several universities in 3 countries to improve his knowledge in different areas of the music, He has performed with important Venezuelan musicians including Pablo Gil, Andres Briceño, Leo Quintero, Xavier Padilla, Aquiles Baez, Orquesta Sinfónica Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, among many others, including international Musicians from Ireland, Spain, France & USA. Leo has performed in several countries like Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Spain, Russia and Ireland at festivals such as Electric Picnic, Music al Carrer, XII Festival Jazz al Parque, Nagua-Nagua Jazz Festival, Jazz Festival El Hatillo, Festival de Jazz en el Orinoco, Leopoldo is also very active as a Jazz Pianist and Piano Teacher.
Michael Behan: Michael has been playing and teaching guitar for over 30 years and has performed and taught in a variety of genres, including jazz, latin, rock and blues. Michael is very active on the Dublin jazz scene, playing with his own quartet in clubs including Le Circ and the International Bar, and accompanying singers in venues such as Café en Seine. He also accompanied the late New York jazz singer Herb Dade in the RTÉ television documentary Mono iand has performed regularly with the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra. He has supported the acclaimed American band, The Jazz Crusaders. Michael teaches guitar at the Waltons New School of Music, and l holds a BMus degree and a Higher Diploma in Education, both from Trinity College Dublin.
Dave Mooney hails from south Dublin and has performed internationally. He received a scholarship to study in Berklee College of Music Boston, from which he holds a BMus, and also a diploma in jazz performance from the London GuildHall School of Music. Dave has appeared, performed, and recorded with a vast array of artists in jazz and Latin genres and has completed three successful European tours with Gavin Friday. He has also performed with the +55 Samba Collective, Samuel Jackson, the late Jeff Ramsey (Al Jarreau Group), the Young European Strings and lots more. Dave has toured internationally including the Balkans, leading his own jazz quartet and bringing together some of the Balkans top jazz musicians from Macedonia, Croatia and Serbia. Dave’s performances have included, the National Concert Hall, Dublin, The Olympia, The Paradiso, Amsterdam, The Bacchus Jazz Club, Il Bottaccio, London and many more. Dave was also chosen to represent Ireland at the IASJ schools of Jazz conference and concert in London.
