1798 Rebellion Re-Enactment

The bustling town of Enniscorthy has planned the perfect outing this summer as they commemorate the 220th Anniversary of the 1798 Rebellion of Vinegar Hill & host the All Ireland Farmers Market in Abbey Square on Sunday 17th June.

Throughout the weekend of the 15th to the 17th of June the towns of New Ross & Enniscorthy will see history come to life as costumed Re-enactors from the UK & Ireland will give a sense of the atmosphere prior to the rebellion of 1798 with their colourful redcoat uniforms and military displays during the weekend!
On Friday evening at 7pm a wreath laying ceremony will formally play tribute to all who died during the 1798 Rebellion as the Rebels & Redcoats join Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Cllr Keith Doyle for this commemorative ceremony.

On Saturday 16th June New Ross plays host to the Re-enactors. On Mary St pike charging rebels will face off against musket firing Redcoats as they re-enact the epic battle of New Ross.
On Sunday 17th June visitors are recommended to begin their day in Abbey Sq from 10am where the All Irelands Farmers Market is taking place & a Rebel Camp will be set up showing weapons & other artefacts from the 1798 Rebellion.

Enniscorthy will provide culinary inspiration to visitors on Sunday 17th June with the All Ireland Farmers Market taking place in Abbey Sq. Some of the finest artisan food producers in Ireland will gather to compete for valuable and coveted prizes and a diverse selection of stalls from the four corners of Ireland providing the ideal opportunity to sample fresh & innovative produce direct from the maker in bright sunshine of the sunny south east! More stories of the past will be brought to life by members of Shine Bright Theatre company and activities will also include face painting and more!

Sunday 17th June will also bring an insight into one of the most significant stories of Irish history as Enniscorthy honours the 1798 Rebellion of Vinegar Hill with a Rebellion Re-enactment. Experience the sights, sounds & smells of battle as the Rebels and Redcoats gather on the hill in histrionic style to re-enact the heroic and passionate Battle of Vinegar Hill. This battle extravaganza has to be seen to be believed with Cavalry Assaults, Cannon Bombardments, Musket Volleys & Pike Charges
